Use Cookie Cutters to Decorate Cakes
Beatriz da Costa
Original Purpose: Creating an army of gingerbread men.
Aha! Use: Stenciling designs on frosted or unfrosted cakes. Place cookie cutters on top and fill with sprinkles, powdered sugar, or cocoa powder. (Warning: This technique may convince guests you’ve taken a master class in cake decorating.)
Reward: A shortcut to creative cake toppers.

No-Cost Sandwich Press
Jonelle Weaver
Original Use: Dinner plate and tomato can.
Aha! Use: Sandwich press. Make a sandwich of French or Italian bread and your favorite slices of meat and cheese. Spread butter on the outside of the bread, place the sandwich in a warm skillet over medium heat, and lay a standard dinner plate and a 28-ounce can of tomatoes on top of the sandwich for 3 minutes. Flip over and repeat.

Slice Cheese with Dental Floss
Rick Lew
Original Purpose: Cleaning teeth and gums.
Aha! Use: Slicing soft cheese, cake, and hard-boiled eggs. It's hygienic, neat, and cheap. Unwaxed works best, and of course you know better than to mix mint-flavored with a vintage Gorgonzola.
Reward: Neater food, fewer cavities.
Other Use: As a substitute for kitchen twine to truss a chicken.
Reward: Panini all around!

Marbles as Double-Boiler Aid
Monica Buck
Original Purpose: Shooting for the hole while playing for keepsies.
Aha! Use: Alerting you when you need to add more water to a double boiler. Place a few marbles in the bottom pan; they’ll start to rattle when most of the water has evaporated.
Reward: Melted chocolate that remains unscorched.
